YJIA maintains strict editorial standards for its online and print publications. The following policies detail these standards in full. Any questions about the policies below can be directed to yjia@yale.edu

Blind Review

YJIA reviews all submissions through an author-blind process. At the close of each call for submissions, managing editors scrub any and all identifying information from submitted work. The redacted versions are then distributed to editorial staff for review. Editors assign scores to each submitted piece, and the highest scoring pieces are then added to a short list. The final selection is made from this short list, as approved by the lead editors and the Editor-in-Chief.

The blind review process was adopted in Fall 2021 to mitigate bias in the selection process. Pieces are evaluated according to their merit before the author’s identity, position, or affiliation is considered. This ensures that research analysis from emerging writers is considered with the same weight as established academics and practitioners.

Citations and Plagiarism

YJIA maintains a zero tolerance policy for plagiarism. All submitted work is run through online plagiarism checks to identify copied or plagiarized writing. Plagiarism is grounds for immediate rejection, discontinuation of editing, or removal from the YJIA website. Authors are advised to run their work through plagiarism detection software before submitting it to YJIA.

YJIA does not accept articles that have been submitted to, or published in, other publications.

All pieces must be properly cited according to the YJIA style guide. Citations are the authors responsibility. Editors will work with the authors to identify areas where minor additional citations are needed, though poorly cited writing will not be accepted.

AI POLICY

YJIA will not accept content that has been written wholly or in part by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and will run all pieces through AI-checking software prior to acceptance. Editors retain the right to rescind a piece at any point in the editorial process if the author violates this policy.

Editorial Policy

YJIA does not take editorial positions. All views published by YJIA are those of the authors alone. Opinions expressed by individual editorial staff members do not necessarily reflect the views of other editors or YJIA itself.

Authors are nonetheless encouraged to pitch and submit opinion pieces to YJIA to express their views on matters of international affairs.

Editing, Corrections, and Removal Policy

During the editorial process, authors whose submissions have been accepted for publication by the editorial team will be contacted by editors at YJIA for corrections. Authors are expected to give timely responses to the editorial team in order to ensure that on-time publication and distribution of the Journal is possible. Failure to do so may result in rescinding a piece accepted for publication. Editors reserve the right to delay publication of a piece to a future YJIA issue if such need arises.

Published pieces may be corrected for minor factual inaccuracies. If the editorial team is made aware of incorrect information in a published article, the team may edit the published piece in consultation with the author. Notes and expiations of any corrections will be added below the text of the piece.

If the inaccuracies are numerous or significant, YJIA editors reserve the right to remove pieces from its website at their discretion.

Further, if an author fails to disclose a conflict of interest in their submission or during the editorial process, YJIA reserves the right to remove pieces of such concern. Authors should disclose any protection conflict of interest with their editors as soon as their work is selected.

No sponsored content

YJIA does not accept sponsored content or advertisements. Authors must disclose any relevant institutional affiliations, financial, or personal conflicts during the editorial process. Failure to do so may result in termination of editing or removal of published work from the website.

Privacy Policy

In the course of reviewing submissions, communicating with authors, and publishing work, YJIA may collect and store information about authors. This information may include names, email addresses, social media handles, author-provided biographies, and institutional affiliations. YJIA uses this information solely to communicate with authors and edit their work. YJIA does not share this information with third parties. Information is stored for five years before deletion.

Authors will also have the option to provide basic demographic information during the submission process. This information holds no bearing on the review process and is entirely voluntary. YJIA will use this information to analyze where authors learn of YJIA and the diversity of authors selected for publication. This analysis is meant to ensure that YJIA presents a diverse set of perspectives on global affairs. The collected demographic data will be anonymized and stored for a period of time at the discretion of the Managing Editors.
